Medical applications of phytoestrogens from the Thai herb

Suchinda Malaivijitnond

Frontiers of Medicine 2012, Volume 6, Issue 1,   Pages 8-21 doi: 10.1007/s11684-012-0184-8

Abstract:

Pueraria mirifica Airy Shaw et Suvatabandhu is a medicinal plant endemic to Thailand. It has been used in Thai folklore medicine for its rejuvenating qualities in aged women and men for nearly one hundred years. Indeed, it has been claimed that P. mirifica contains active phytoestrogens (plant substances with estrogen-like activity). Using high performance liquid chromatography, at least 17 phytoestrogens, mainly isoflavones, have been isolated. Thus, fairly considerable scientific researches, both in vitro in cell lines and in vivo in various species of animals including humans, have been conducted to date to address its estrogenic activity on the reproductive organs, bones, cardiovascular diseases and other climacteric related symptoms. The antioxidative capacity and antiproliferative effect on tumor cell lines have also been assessed. In general, P. mirifica could be applicable for preventing, or as a therapeutic for, the symptoms related to estrogen deficiency in menopausal women as well as in andropausal men. However, the optimal doses for each desirable effect and the balance to avoid undesired side effects need to be calculated before use.

Nonlinear Science and Its Medical Applications

Tu Chengyuan,Zeng Yanjun

Strategic Study of CAE 2003, Volume 5, Issue 8,   Pages 45-49

Abstract:

The fractal-dimension theory and the Shannom entropy theory of nonlinear science are briefly described, and the methods to apply them to analyze AF's information are developed. The grid-dimension values and the Shannom entropy values of P-wave and those of f-wave are computed. The comparison of the remarkable difference between values of these two kinds of waves is given so as to easily determine whether AF happens or not.

Ingestible wireless capsules for enhanced diagnostic inspection of gastrointestinal tract

Mahdi RASOULI, Andy Prima KENCANA, Van An HUYNH, Eng Kiat TING, Joshua Chong Yue LAI, Kai Juan WONG, Su Lim TAN, Soo Jay PHEE

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2011, Volume 6, Issue 1,   Pages 40-44 doi: 10.1007/s11465-011-0204-4

Abstract:

Wireless capsule endoscopy has become a common procedure for diagnostic inspection of gastrointestinal tract. This method offers a less-invasive alternative to traditional endoscopy by eliminating uncomfortable procedures of the traditional endoscopy. Moreover, it provides the opportunity for exploring inaccessible areas of the small intestine. Current capsule endoscopes, however, move by peristalsis and are not capable of detailed and on-demand inspection of desired locations. Here, we propose and develop two wireless endoscopes with maneuverable vision systems to enhance diagnosis of gastrointestinal disorders. The vision systems in these capsules are equipped with mechanical actuators to adjust the position of the camera. This may help to cover larger areas of the digestive tract and investigate desired locations. The preliminary experimental results showed that the developed platform could successfully communicate with the external control unit via human body and adjust the position of camera to limited degrees.
